How long your laptop battery will keep your computer up depends on certain criteria.
It may not be easy to determine.
How long, depends on the laptop model that you have and the battery make.
Some laptops can run for eight (8) hours or more on their battery alone, while others may last less than two (2) hours before they need to be recharged.
You should contact your owners manual or manufacturer's website of your laptop brand. There you should be able to get an estimated run time.
Also remember that the size of the screen, the power of your processor (dual or duo core and the i specs will consume powers differently), your hard ware and applications you run (DVD, CD/DVD-Burning, office, third party softwares, games and external hardwares plugged in at different periods) are all determinants.
Eventually the pc will run out of power and you are left with the only option of recharging.
Recharge the battery. Laptop batteries are rechargeable, simply plug it in to your AC power outlet. This will get your laptop battery charging even while the laptop is still on (but you can shut it down to charge the battery faster). You can keep your laptop on to use while charging.
Moreover, getting the most out of your battery also depends on what you do (what you use your laptop for). There are several ways of making the battery serve you longer. It is recommended to charge your battery up to 100%. Then use without plugging in to the wall socket or extension till it runs low usually between 5%-15%. Though Li-Ion, Li-Poly, and newer Ni-MH batteries do not require this step, we have found that it does usually help extend the life of the battery.
Nevertheless, increasing your pc run time (how long you can use your laptop on battery power) depends on the applications and tasks that you have your laptop running.
For example, more power is consumed when you play a DVD movie with the ROM. Same thing applies when you are burning a CD-R/CD-RW or playing a full screen 3D video game or watching a movie in HD. They all consume enormous power and the result is reduced battery run time. It is in your best interest to plug the laptop into the wall socket if you want to use for any of these situations.
Notably, you can get car power adapters for your laptop; this will charge your battery and power your laptop while you are on the road. Laptop power banks are now available.
Use of lite applications that takes less time to install, consumes considerable little power, ram and hard disk space (supporting your laptop battery for a longer run time) are advised.
Screen resolution and backlight setting are also good pointers to help in extending battery run time.
External connection to extra ports on the pc such as USB mouse, USB Scanners, Memory Card reader (mainly those that does not have their own power source), etc all take more power from your precious laptop's battery life thereby, reducing the run time.
You can still research more ways in which you can get your battery to serve you longer or you can add them up here too in your comments below.
If your laptop battery can not backup as it used to and you can only get thirty minutes or at most forty five of work done before you need to start searching for an AC outlet? Sounds like it's time for a replacement battery. It is true that laptop batteries are expensive but without a good backup your pc hard drive is at a risk and you could eventually lost your data in the occurrence of a possible crash. Price vary from one model to another but new ones sell for a few thousands of naira if you know what I mean. There are some as high as ten to fifteen thousand naira. When you consider that brand-new laptops now sell from as low as forty five thousand naira, it can be a hard pill to swallow. If your laptop is your primary PC, and you are sure of constant power from your AC outlet (can't vouch for that anyway) you may be wasting battery cycles by leaving it plugged in all the time. Try removing the battery until you actually need to go somewhere with your l...
